MSI 1GHz HD 4890 review

MSI is working on a special Radeon HD 4890 which should be called MSI R4890 Cyclone, according to a recent post at Fudzilla.

The card features MSI SuperPipe cooler with four 8mm heatpipes, Hi-C CAPS which generates clean and stable power for the GPU, and 5+2 phase power supply. It might be another card with a GPU clock set at 1GHz, but it’s uncertain yet as the card is still under development.

MSI R4890 Cyclone is expected to show its face at ComputeX 2009 next month.

XFX First to Use Premium Reference Design for Radeon HD 4770

XFX continues to show enthusiasm with its ATI Radeon line of products, by designing the first Radeon HD 4770 accelerator for the market with the premium reference design for Radeon HD 4770 (model: XFX 4770ST D5 512MB). AMD had come up with two choices of coolers for its partners. Most of them choose the one which is more cost-effective, so the sales margins could be improved in an already tight pricing-segment.

XFX used the premium reference-design cooler and PCB, with a major difference that it comes in black instead of red. XFX has so far had a knack of trying as hard as it can, to color its cards black. The company did so with the Radeon HD 4870 reference design accelerator recently. This card retains the reference clock speeds of 750 MHz (core), and 800 MHz (memory). Given that XFX chose the more expensive parts in making this card, it will pass on the premium to the consumer, making it slightly more expensive than the reference design cards in its league.

Radeon HD 4770 Ready For Launch

The samples AMD’s first 40nm desktop graphics card Radeon HD 4770 (RV740) have popped up in Hong Kong, though it’s slated to launch next month.

The specs of Radeon HD 4770 were unveiled at the end of March: 640 stream processors, high-speed GDDR5 memory and core/memory clock of 750/800MHz. It also comes with 3+1 phase power supply and 6pin external power connector. Thanks to the 40nm manufacturing process, the power consumption has been reduced to 80W.

The Radeon HD 4770 samples have been sent out to media for test, and the vendors are also well stocked. The first batch of retail edition should reach store next week in Hong Kong, with price tag of HKD$850-890 which is around US$110-115.

Radeon HD 4770 Ready For Launch

We said that Radeon HD 4770 was designed to take the place of HD 4830, and we found 800SP Radeon HD 4830 earlier this month which could be regarded as a downclocked edition of HD 4850. We think this is AMD’s marketing strategy with purpose of reducing the stock of HD 4830 to smooth the way for HD 4770.
